Whatever happened to reality tv?

Raakhi ka swayamvar… Khatron ke khiladi…. entertainment ke liye kuchh bhi karega… Britains got talent.. Sach ka saamna… Moment of truth…. and the list is endless.
TV these days is more of people trying to make a fool of themselves, or trying to show how daring they can be, for some amount of money aptly termed ‘life changing amount’ in one of these programmes. Of course, it changes your life. Instant celebrity for a week – thats how.
Every channel i turn to, has one of these shows going on – some of them are good – no doubt – Roadies for example – but most of them are pure crap. And i mean it. As in, every channel has these days at least one ‘reality’ dance show, one ‘reality’ singing show and one ‘reality’ stunt show – and to top it all, all of these are either franchises or copies of existing shows in the US or the UK. C’mon guys? cant think of something original??
oops… sorry… i forgot.. yeah we did do something original – Rakhi ka swayamwar – and everybody knows what crap that was!

For me, Reality TV signifies something totally different. Go back a few years. I still remember a show called ‘Whos line is it anyway’ (WLIIA) – Now that was reality TV. 4 guys – for sure with extremely high IQ – and an amazing host (Drew Carey). How the hell did they ever come up with those performances is just pure genius. I still watch those episodes online, and just cant control my laughter.
Why cant reality tv be like this? Pure, un-adulterated fun – entertainment for everybody – something new everytime – every episode – intelligent people, doing intelligent stuff – rather than trying to prove that they are smarter than a 5th grader. Or, is TRP everything? and of course, some big shot host? Where the hell is the talent?

Something to think about, aint it???

agreed…agreed…..but haven’t u heard of voyeurism?? Human beings revel and find joy in the misfortunes of others…or is it that we like watching stuff we don’t have the guts to do ourselves??? Food for thought surely!

well.. im sure a lot of people wouldnt have guts to be on stage on something like Whose line also – its just that all these shows are not catering to intellectual audiences anymore…
