Some guys never stop rocking…..

Bollywood music has come a long way…. at least since what i remember of it a few years ago… with Anu Malik’s ‘inspired’ songs… to Laxmikant Pyarelal et al… Its so cool and a breath of fresh air to hear stuff by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Rehman and Vishal (of Pentagram fame)… and not to forget Vishal Bhardwaj… These guys have actually crossed the bounds set by the older generation of music directors and ventured into new boundaries.. that really have no limits… To get me to start hearing, and liking bollywood music takes a lot. And trust me.. these days im doing that more often than not.

Which brings me to the latest album out from Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (SEL) – Wake Up Sid. The movie releases in a weeks time. But the music is rocking already. Heard it— could make out it was SEL. The guys are just awesome – the way they can get western music blended into Hindi lyrics and indian styles, is just amazing. I mean… how often do you hear a heavy distortion guitar behind hindi lyrics, and still find it perfectly blended…

Going thru the songs – i came across one called ‘Life is crazy’… as i was listening to it – my brain told me that the voice singing was familiar… but familiar from a long time back… i knew the voice.. but just couldnt connect to whose it was. A few googles later, i stumbled upon the name… ‘of course’ is what came to my mind… had to be him. The grand-daddy of Indian Rock – Uday Benegal.

Which brings me to the topic of this post…

To all those who do not know this name – Uday was the lead singer of a band called Rock Machine – later known as Indus Creed. These guys were the first Rock band in India to get fame – not just for their cover versions – but for the original stuff…  I still have the cassette of one of their albums… and trust me… i still listen to it. The guys were the first to introduce Indian instruments in the genre of Rock.. and they not only got away with it… but made it sound just wonderful – the tabla at the outro of Pretty Child, is something i can listen to ever and over again, and never get sick of listening to it.
Uday and the lead guitarist from Indus Creed (Jayesh Gandhi) later formed ‘Alms For Shanti’ and did some amazing fusion stuff, collaborating with the likes of Taufiq Qureshi. However – they did not get much fame thru this – even though they managed to sell quite a few albums internationally!.

So – listen to the song ‘Life is crazy’. The music is apt… SEL does a wonderful job… but what brings the song out is Uday’s voice – his style – which is still the same – and brings back memories of years gone by… The pretty child video on MTV (before it turned desi)… That prized Rock Machine cassette… The live concerts of Indus Creed…

As i said – Some guys never stop rocking… and i hope they never will.

PS. I found Uday Benegals blog as well – The Effable Word
